New Year's Blue Laws Cripple Local Barkeeps In Aiken County

New Year's Eve will be dry for many Aiken County bars due to South Carolina blue laws still limiting liquor sales. The ABCC provides a two hour window from 12 01 a.m. to 2 a.m. on New Year s Eve when minibottle license holders may sell, treating one minute after midnight as Monday to aid finances. Bar operators remain dissatisfied, noting the window is too short and many venues cannot profit from the exception.

The Salvation Army Christmas Cheer Fund raised 15065.63 dollars to aid 2616 people during the holidays. It funded 417 food checks totaling 7131 dollars, 2364 toys, and 510 gift boxes of toiletry items. Gift boxes reached 271 at a jail and youth center, 132 at three nursing homes in Aiken County, 75 at senior sites, seven to transients, and 25 others. Donors numbered 596, volunteering 1191 hours.
