Nineteen college age contestants from 13 southern states gather in Memphis to begin preliminary judging for the Maid of Cotton title. The winner will serve as a travel ambassador for the cotton industry with a first public appearance at the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day in Dallas.
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird grins after a reporter calls him Secretary McNamara at a Pentagon briefing. He notes heavy U S air strikes in North Vietnam and accuses Hanoi of violating the cease fire understandings that ended major bombing three years ago.
The FBI found overall crime up six percent with violent crime up ten and property crime six. Attorney General John N. Mitchell said the rise is the smallest in five years and noted 52 large cities with populations over 100000 had fewer crimes than a year earlier while large cities over 250000 averaged a three percent increase. Suburban and rural areas rose 11 and 6 percent respectively as all major crime categories including murder and auto theft climbed.
New York Mayor John Lindsay announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in Miami. He attacked the Nixon administration for catering to entrenched wealth and power, and noted his switch from the Republican Party in August.
Washington AP report says top Pentagon officials study drafting young men into the Army National Guard. Legal and political hurdles exist, but sources say a draft may be the only way to bolster a sagging but critical part of the nation’s military establishment.
Senator Vance Hartke of Indiana indicated he is leaning toward entering New Hampshire's Democratic presidential primary. He spoke in Manchester after a news conference and said he would decide before the January 6 filing deadline.
Everett L. Holt 25 of Indianapolis a postal clerk has been indicted by a federal grand jury on air piracy kidnapping and related charges for the Christmas Eve hijacking of a Northwest Orient Airlines jet. He allegedly used a revolver to seize the plane sought 300000 in ransom and threatened a flight attendant to access the cockpit. Holt is jailed on 100000 bond after police captured him when passengers and crew fled at O Hare following a Minneapolis to Chicago flight.
South Carolina peach growers report insufficient chilling hours as unseasonably warm weather continues through Thursday. Aiken County farmers Lewis W. New and Mrs. Lewis H. Jackson halt pruning and worry that only 386 chilling hours have occurred this season vs the 650 needed for a good crop, risking imperfect buds and dropped fruit.
The Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce will host Meet Your Senator on January 6 at 8 p.m. in the Heritage Room of the Farmers and Merchants Bank. Senators Strom Thurmond and Ernest Hollings will answer 35 selected questions from the public, with Carl Littlejohn as moderator.

Mrs. Charlotte T Henderson named supervisor in charge of the Aiken County Department of Public Welfare. Lee Barnes notes she has six years with the department and was food stamp supervisor. A Charleston native and University of South Carolina graduate, she is widow of Frampton W Henderson with four children.
AP reports the May 3 1964 style heavy bombing continues with 350 aircraft and helicopters striking over 500 attack missions plus hundreds of support sorties. Constellation and Coral Sea aircraft lead the raid from Tonkin Gulf while rest fly from bases in Southeast Asia. Hanoi claims pilots killed or captured and a seventh plane down but US officials offer no comment.
Joel Gunnells executive director of the Lower Savannah Regional Commission will resign, effective February 1, after a meeting with the commission's executive board. He cites controversy with the Aiken County delegation over residency in Augusta and has received another job offer. The delegation has linked Gunnells' status to funding and budget provisions in past disputes.
