Seven Die On South Carolina Roads During Holiday

Preliminary figures show seven deaths on South Carolina highways during the Christmas extended holiday from Dec 21 to Dec 26. The 102 hour period spans 6 p.m. Dec 21 to midnight Dec 26, with Aiken County reporting a holiday fatality, the Jeep Cherokee rollover in Wagener. As of Dec 26, 1,056 SC highway deaths year to date, including 496 of 798 vehicle occupants not wearing seat belts. Police will boost impaired driving patrols this weekend.

Aiken County Museum unveils two new exhibits in January

The Aiken County Historical Museum previews two new rooms North Augusta and Merchants. Opening delays push completion to the second or third week of January with both rooms open during work. Levy notes room themes include Hamburg Hampton Terrace Hotel North Augusta founder James A. Jackson and local businesses like Julia's Dress Shop and Aiken Bakery. A possible opening reception is discussed. The January lecture series runs Tuesdays Jan 22 to Feb 19 with USC Aiken support. tickets are 30 dollars with proceeds split between Friends and USC Aiken. Man tied to multiple credit card thefts turns himself in

Charleston man Malcolm Kareem Wilson, 31, is jailed on 10 counts of financial transaction card fraud. Investigators tie him to a September theft in Aiken, where stolen cards used for about 6000 dollars in three hours across jewelry, home improvement stores, and Wal-Mart. He has prior property-crime convictions and was listed among the city’s most wanted before surrendering to police with attorney present.

Aiken Launches Rental Registration In March

City of Aiken will start a voluntary rental registration program in March. Property owners within the city must register annually and those living over 50 miles away must name a local emergency contact. The program aims to improve communication between property owners and city officials. Registration is free and forms will be online or at the Municipal Building.
