Hopelands Christmas Ends Tonight With Public Openings

Hopelands Christmas in Hopelands wraps up tonight from 6 to 9 pm with The Doll House Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Rye Patch also open and decorated. A Belvedere man Otis Collier died Friday evening after stepping into traffic on Highway 25 and being struck by multiple vehicles near Celest Avenue. The incident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Deputy coroner Bill Cole said Collier was pronounced dead at the scene after family identification.

Maryland debates Confederate license plates in state

Maryland's Motor Vehicle Administration issued special plates featuring the Confederate flag to about 70 Sons of Confederate Veterans members. Critics from the Legislative Black Caucus and NAACP urge the agency to halt the plates, calling the move Jim Crow symbolism and harmful.

Maryland considers altering Confederate battle flag license plates

Griffin defends plates as heritage symbol, noting his great great grandfather fought for the Confederacy. The plates show a left side Confederate battle flag and Sons Confederate Veterans under the number. About 170 nonprofits have such plates among 3.7 million issued. 70 sets bear the flag. MVA spokesman Jim Lang says officials will review the controversy as complaints emerge.
