The Far Side by Gary Larson will end publication at year end due to retirement. It will be replaced in the Aiken Standard by Ralph, a Wayne Stayskal creation, with Close To Home taking the Far Side’s Sunday color spot starting January 1 1995.
A federal judge denied bond for Jimmy Ray Gartman Sr. of Pine Ridge who allegedly tried to hire two men for 60 000 to kill an FBI agent an assistant U S attorney and three others as revenge for his son’s investigation and prosecution. Gartman Jr 29 is serving a five and a half year sentence at the federal prison in Estill.
A leaking pipe in an earthen dam on a 14 acre pond prompted temporary evacuation of about 20 families on Tuesday. There was little risk of catastrophic failure, and many families returned home after engineers evaluated the site. Sheriff James Metts cited the unresolved extent of damage as the reason for the precaution.

GREENVILLE South Carolina blue laws force alcohol service to stop at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Bars restaurants and hotels must close liquor service by midnight to prevent Saturday night celebrations spilling into Sunday. Exceptions exist for private clubs and charity events with special permits.
