Preservation group aims to save Charleston freedman cottages
The Preservation Society of Charleston buys a dilapidated 1885 800 square foot freedman cottage on East Side for 30000 dollars with private donations. It will be renovated and sold with a protective easement to first time buyers, preserving architectural character. Work includes adding a bedroom and may finish in spring. The society surveys cottages city wide to plan future restorations while highlighting the historical significance of these houses built 1870 to 1930 for working class residents.
