In Durango two climbers Brett Woods and Keith Cartwright were buried for nearly seven hours in six feet of snow after a Christmas avalanche. Passersby heard screams and saw Woods blue glove, enabling rescue. They describe staying calm and pounding air pockets. both listed in satisfactory condition with hypothermia and muscle injuries. Meanwhile, Christmas weekend highway deaths reached 357 nationwide, with Florida 40, California 38, and Texas 33, per police reports and the National Safety Council.

A DOE study, the 2010 Report to Congress, says SRP reactors even if restarted next year cannot meet national tritium needs. It notes costs for safety upgrades and modernization up to 1989 and $81 billion to 2010 in 1990 dollars, with total project costs around $250 billion. The three SRP reactors were shut down in August for structural and management flaws.
South Carolina officials say a new computerized federal tax filing program could deliver refunds in as few as 18 days this year. Authorized preparers will offer the service for a fee, with a list to be released in mid January. The program will be tested for state taxes next year. The system reduces errors from 20 percent to 3 percent via built in validity checks and provides immediate receipt acknowledgment through the IRS.
The Internal Revenue Service begins mailing 101 million tax forms today with simpler, different forms than those sent last year. The change aims to streamline the filing process for taxpayers, with details continuing on UNCLE page 10A.
An aging Boeing 727 suffered a 14 inch fuselage hole causing cabin depressurization on Eastern Air Lines Flight 251 from Rochester to Atlanta. The plane landed safely at Yeager Airport, Charleston, and no passengers were treated for related injuries. Passengers described a sudden pop and the wind rushing through the fuselage. Federal officials noted prior cracks and corrosion with additional inspections ongoing.

A Utah department store roof collapse occurred without injuries as snow drifts reached six feet.
A Media General AP poll shows Ronald Reagan remains personally popular as two thirds endorse his overall performance while most see him unfavorably on social and governmental issues such as education ethics and judgment yet defense and economic leadership receive high marks and respondents deem him effective in achieving goals. The survey of 1084 adults was taken Nov 10 20 shortly after George Bush won the election.
