The Aiken Standard adds Garfield as a new daily comic replacing The Muppets after readers voted it the most desired addition. Garfield’s night panel shows a cat with a unique outlook, reflecting attitudes readers may recognize in their own pets.
A major storm buried Colorado with up to four feet of snow and closed roads and airports. Dozens of tornadoes raked Arkansas Missouri and Mississippi, causing deaths and evacuations. Denver area declared a state of emergency as 2000 travelers slept in Denver's Union Station amid snowbound delays.
Aiken City Councilman Howard M. Hickey Jr.’s garage was nearly destroyed by a late night fire. Fire units arrived between 11:30 p.m. and midnight and stopped the blaze from spreading to the Hickey home at 438 Grace Ave. Damages are not yet estimated and the cause is under investigation, not considered suspicious.
Five year old Carolyn Celeste Cockerell worried Santa would leave gifts at her Abilene Texas home instead of her grandmother’s in Aiken. Santa delivered as promised, locating her in Aiken.
Tomorrow night the county council will hear Administrator W. Scott Barnes present his annual report on county government as required by the Home Rule Act. The agenda includes Belvedere Water and Sewer District tax concerns and Pineview Estates’ push to exit the district with a public hearing request. Also on the docket are a second reading on a budget voting procedure and a third reading authorizing $1 million in industrial revenue bonds for United Services Inc. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the council conference room at 736 Richland Ave.
Israeli forces hold the hills around Khalde as talks on Lebanese withdrawal begin. Lebanese army says 100 soldiers secure the Khalde area while Christian and Druse factions trade heavy fire nearby. Police report 18 killed and 27 wounded in 36 hours of sectarian fighting.
Senator Strom Thurmond says he may run again for Senate in 1984 and hopes to have 100000 dollars set aside by year end. The 80 year old Republican from South Carolina designated his 1978 senatorial committee as his major campaign panel for 1984 while leaning toward a bid. He chairs the Judiciary Committee and is Senate president pro tempore.
