Novices Fight To Get Truman On S.C. Ballot
In 1948 a group of political novices organized the national Democratic party in South Carolina to place Harry Truman on the ballot amid Dixiecrat opposition. They printed ballots, gained recognition in about half of 46 counties, and despite Truman not winning the state, Baker and others were invited to Truman’s inauguration. Ashton Williams became a federal judge later, and Baker recalls enduring insults but expressing pride in backing Truman. Thurmond won the state with 102,607 votes to Truman’s 24,423.
