Mystery plant with downy pappus dispersal described
A native sunflower family plant from Maine to Texas forms a biennial rosette and a tall second-year stalk with wine red or yellow heads. The one-seeded fruits have a pappus that acts as a parachute for air dispersal and attracts goldfinches. John Nelson of the A C Moore Herbarium offers free identifications.
