Deodara Estate Ties to Stewart and Aiken Center History

Stewart built the 6000 foot structure on the land and owned it until 1871. By 1901 the house was named Deodara after abundant Cedrus deodara trees. During World War II it served as the Aiken Recreation Center for servicemen, led by Dorothy Knox Goodyear Rogers. Celebrities visited, including Stewart, who flew in World War II. Stewart rose to briga dier general in 1959 and retired in 1968. In 1949 he married Gloria Hatrick McLean, linking to Evalyn Walsh McLean, late owner of the Hope Diamond and former Washington Post owner Ned McLean. Stewart died in 1997 at 89.

Aiken County EMS faces staffing push and pay boosts

In August the County Council unanimously passed a resolution to raise salaries and expand EMS recruitment outreach. The plan calls for faster training through partner institutions, an automatic vehicle locator system to dispatch units more efficiently, and private services to supplement staff. By November 10 vacancies fell from 10 to eight as Kilian and the panel sought market-driven hires, though zero-vehicle status scenarios reportedly declined.
