The Aiken Standard will observe the Christmas holiday on Monday December 26. Newspaper offices at 124 Rutland Dr will be closed that day and reopen Tuesday morning at 8 30 a m The Aiken Standard will publish and deliver a newspaper as usual on Monday.
Calhoun Thomas Jr, a 60 year old developer and attorney, faced bond hearings after Columbia police charged him with two counts of blackmail. Authorities allege he mailed threats to reveal nude photographs to extract a $5,000 settlement and force renewal of a sexual relationship with the woman, who is engaged to a man named Prioso.
The FBI will shift its top South Carolina agent with Dodge Frederick replacing James Oppy as special agent in charge. Frederick, formerly assistant special agent in charge in Philadelphia, will report January 9 and arrive mid January to take personnel duties at FBI headquarters in Washington. He studied at Presbyterian College and USC and taught in Orangeburg.

Aiken County reports 30 accidents amid heavy rains. Elderly Tennessee couple Earl and Emma Meeks died after their car hydroplanned on I-20. Jenny Brown of Lexington struck them after crossing the median. Tanya Forney's car lost control triggering the chain of crashes. Weather-related wrecks spanned the region with no other fatalities reported.
About 40 children from low income families in the Central Savannah River Area received gifts and clothing in a Shop with a Cop event sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police. Ed Kaney, CSRA FOP Lodge 6 president, notes several clothing items per child and toys included. Justin Doyle, 5, asked for a Power Ranger and received one. Joshua Maroney, 6, got a jacket, pants, shirt, and action figures. The FOP spent 1800 on clothing from Kmart and 400 on turkeys and fruit for families.
The Aiken Jaycees Christmas shopping Tour exceeded its goal this year, raising $6,182 toward helping about 50 area youths. Gifts from individuals and organizations funded winter coats clothing and other needed items plus an educational toy chosen by teachers. Previously unannounced donors to the cause were:
Washington report shows consumer spending rose 0.6 percent in November, the seventh straight gain, despite a 0.1 percent dip in income. Durable goods orders jumped by the largest margin in three months, signaling continued economic growth as 1994 nears end. Analysts from Northern Trust and the Commerce Department note balanced expansion and sustained demand.
Aiken shelters face holiday gaps as families gather elsewhere. The Salvation Army sweater distribute meals at Ova Park Avenue is understaffed and cannot host a big Christmas dinner this year. Director Kay Miles says volunteers are needed to prepare meals for the few residents.
