Convict in 1964 slayings clings to silence at prison
Edgar Ray Killen, age 89, remains a staunch segregationist and refuses to discuss the 1964 Freedom Summer killings of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. In a four hour AP interview at Mississippi State Penitentiary he defends no ill will yet offers no confession. The case helped spur the Civil Rights Act and linked him to the crime. Killen is serving 60 years for manslaughter following a 2005 conviction.
