19th Century Slave Cemetery Found Near Liberty

Local historian Julia Woodson learned her father's grave remains unknown until workers uncovered artifacts on the Crane property southeast of Pickens County airport. State archaeologists estimate five or six slave graves based on casket handles beads and ground impressions while trees and plat records trace ownership to the Boggs Hollingsworth and Ansel families. The cemetery was once part of a 110 acre parcel later divided and abandoned.
