Penland dies developer of Houndslake remembered
Houndslake Country Club and golf course will close Tuesday in memory of Robert E. Penland 81 who helped establish the course and surrounding neighborhood in the early 1970s. Aiken native and USC benefactor Penland also helped found the University of South Carolina at Aiken and served on USC Development Foundation boards until his death.

A core group of 30 service recipients at the Tri-Development Center meet monthly to plan projects. Thompson declines offer from Oregon to remain in Aiken
Aiken City Manager Steve Thompson said he will not accept Medford Oregon’s offer. He cited strong current projects and a capable Aiken council. Council member Michael Anaclerio praised his work on landscaping and the city’s strategic plan. Thompson has led Aiken since April 11 1991 after Windham’s retirement.
