Aiken County law enforcement will patrol state highways for drunk drivers during the holidays. The S C Midway Patrol Sheriff’s Department and Public Safety urge not to drive after drinking. DUI arrests rose last month and volunteers may drive intoxicated home.
Miss Christine Satcher born in 1902 recalls a Christmas era in Graniteville when decorations came from nearby woods. Neighbors visited on Christmas Eve sharing fruitcake and carols, candles lit her uncle’s tree, and homes smelled green with holly and smilax. Stockings held fruit and raisins as gifts rested by the hearth.
The Aiken Standard will publish Friday and Monday with a noon Friday close. Advertising and circulation departments keep 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The paper will observe the same schedule for New Years.
Palmer's will serve a Christmas breakfast from 6 to 11 a.m. and a buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. The Holiday Inn offers a Christmas lunch buffet from noon to 3 p.m. Regular hours are 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5:30 to 10 p.m. A 10 percent senior discount is available at the Holiday Inn.
A separate report estimates fourth quarter growth at 4.5 percent, slower than the prior quarter but more sustainable. For 1983 overall growth is projected at 3.3 percent after a 1.9 percent shrinkage last year. Reagan urges Congress to curb spending to sustain momentum and hints at 1984 progress. Inflation for 11 months stands at 3.8 percent, with gasoline prices down 0.8 percent and food up 0.1 percent.

Security workers at the Savannah River Plant investigated a possible theft attempt in the L-Reactor area. A fence breach was found and two searches of the L-Reactor site and surrounding buildings yielded no evidence of stolen government property. Local and plant security rushed to assist, with road searches of SC 125 following the alert.
The Aiken County Salvation Army and Valley Empty Stocking Fund race to raise 33 000 via mail appeals and kettle drives to fund Christmas food checks toys and gifts for nursing home patients and year round programs. 485 gifts were distributed by the League of Mercy to residents in three nursing homes with more to Youth Correction Center for Christmas Day delivery.
