The State Department of Education drops a rule that would prevent school bus drivers from taking buses home. The change will not significantly affect drivers in the Aiken County School District.

Mayor Fred Cavanaugh praised progress in Aiken during a Rotary Club address calling the period the most successful yet. Aiken County Taxpayers Association pushes elimination of school property taxes to fund schools with a two percent sales tax. The nine page position paper argues local problems should be solved locally and cites replacing 41.3 percent of the district budget from property tax as the goal.
Seven South Carolina deaths are blamed on a severe ice storm that caused widespread outages. Four deaths stemmed from carbon monoxide poisoning from gas generators, two truckers died when intersections lost power, and a house fire killed a man warming himself with a stove. Duke Power reported hundreds of thousands without power and aimed to restore most by Tuesday night.
