Aiken man Lee Allen Hiers Jr. led officers on a 91 mph chase through Fisher and Many Louisiana before firing on two police officers and killing himself. Fisher officer Terry Pantalion was wounded and hospitalized. Treese returned fire as Hiers fled, later escaping in his truck. Hiers was wanted in Georgia on grand larceny charges.
Aiken County investigators seek a man who robbed Enterprise Bank in Salley at about 9 50 a.m. Wednesday. He threatened tellers with a silver revolver, took cash, and fled in a white Chevrolet truck. A DNR officer found the abandoned truck behind a home in Orangeburg County about 1.3 miles from the bank.
Bruce Rienzo heads Crosland Park Neighborhood Association while Allus and Christine Bullock light up 746 Vincent Ave. for the first annual decor contest. Christine Bullock wins Best Decorated Residence 2001, receiving a $20 Wal Mart gift certificate. The Bullocks plan to expand yearly.
Westinghouse Savannah River Company workers may face an early retirement option as WSRC considers several alternatives for 2002. President Bob Pedde notes an Early Retirement Incentive being actively considered though DOE permission has not yet been requested. Some staff may plan retirement at year end or early 2002.
The General Services Administration will fund major interior renovations of the Charles E. Simons Jr. Federal Courthouse in downtown Aiken. U.S. District Judge Cameron Currie said the plan aims to restore the interior to a 1930s look, with an elevator to be installed. The building, constructed in 1936 as a WPA project, was renamed for Judge Charles E. Simons Jr. after his long service.
The House approved a package of tax cuts and unemployment aid to boost the economy and sent it to the Senate where Senate Democrats appear positioned to block the measure. The plan aims to spur growth despite Republican hopes of swift passage.
