SCE&G Gas Rate Hike Approved Amid Soaring Prices

Regulators approved a 19 percent natural gas rate increase for SCE&G, effective Jan 1, raising the typical winter bill from 109.17 to 190.45. The Columbia utility cited soaring gas costs with spokesman Roger Schrum noting prices are up to three times higher than a year ago.

Hallman named chancellor of USC Aiken after six month search

Dr. Thomas Hallman was named the next chancellor of the University of South Carolina Aiken after a six month nationwide search. USC President Dr. John J. Palms announced the appointment to more than 150 faculty, staff and community leaders in the Administration Building. Hallman praised the campus and colleagues as Palms thanked the Chancellor Search Committee for their thorough work.

Aiken County retailers told to collect 1 cent tax May 1

The state Department of Revenue has begun notifying retailers in Aiken County to collect the 1 cent local capital projects tax starting May 1. A letter outlining the process for the $54.6 million seven year program was mailed to more than 2,500 businesses this week. The new tax will raise the sales tax to 6 percent in the county and will fund dirt road paving, Bobby Jones Expressway participation, and municipal capital projects. North Augusta and Aiken, among others, will apply revenues to buildings and roads. changes to approved projects are prohibited. The county designates $18 million over seven years for dirt road paving. First payments arrive in July, reflecting two months of revenue. full accuracy will take two to four quarters and depends on road conditions.
