Fund drives to aid the less fortunate at Christmas enter their last week. Sponsored by the Salvation Army Valley Empty Stocking Fund and the Jaycees Christmas Shopping Tour, the drives urge support and donations for those in need.
Palmdale California AP reports the SR-71 Blackbird, a cornerstone of Cold War intelligence, will fly over Lockheed Plant 42 in Palmdale and its facilities in Burbank and Rye Canyon to celebrate 25 years since its first flight on December 22, 1964.
London AP report says nicotine inhaled by smokers may ease Alzheimer's symptoms. Reading University psychologist David Warburton notes patients became more alert and responsive, performing better on mental tests in a study at London University's Institute of Psychiatry with 39 Alzheimer's patients matched to a healthy elderly group.

President Bush vowed to pursue Manuel Noriega after a surprise assault in Panama. Nine Americans were killed, 39 wounded, and one missing as Gen Colin Powell reported troop reinforcements and the operation continued. Bush praised democracy and planned to lift sanctions and turn over the canal per treaties.
The Soviet Union condemned the U S military action to seize Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega while British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher praised the decision as courageous saying someone must uphold democracy The response shows sharp contrast as news spreads that President Bush ordered troops to capture Noriega on cocaine trafficking charges in the United States in 1988
Aiken County Council approved initial steps for a large sewer system to unlock development in Horse Creek Valley and surrounding areas including New Ellenton Jackson and Beech Island. The plan includes designating sections for construction, engaging engineers, and pursuing a $10 million bond financed loan via the South Carolina Resources Authority.
The Commerce Department reports GNP at a 3 percent annual rate for the July to September period, revised up from 2.7 percent, driven by exports and weaker personal consumption. A 2.9 percent price index remains unchanged, while fourth-quarter growth slows amid auto, manufacturing woes and hurricane plus quake disruptions.
