Nuclear waste site choices face public approval push
Federal officials expect at least one of three top sites near Richland Washington Amarillo Texas and Beaty Nevada to win acceptance by 1991 while two Utah locations and a Mississippi site face renewed scrutiny. Energy Secretary Hodel cited long studies and high costs before any repository opens by about 1998 50 000 tons of waste expected in storage by then with construction unlikely before a decade. Local opposition from Texas Nevada and environmental groups remains strong as governors vow to challenge siting.
