D C regulators adopt sweeping new credit card rules

Federal regulators on Thursday adopted sweeping rules for the credit card industry to shield consumers from rate hikes on existing balances and expand protections. The changes, approved by the Fed Treasury Office of Thrift Supervision and NCUA, take effect July 2010 and limit rate increases to new cards and future purchases.
