A Clearwater resident identified as James Broadwater, 59, died in a Saturday morning blaze at his home on Dredge Court off Star Pond. Investigators say a space heater near the bed may have started the fire. he was alone at home. The case remains under investigation.
The South Carolina Department of Public Safety says the first specialty plates will bear the Confederate flag for the Sons of Confederate Veterans. About 2,000 plates are ready for active members, with a $4,000 initial production fee and a $400 prepaid per-application policy for eligible nonprofit groups. The move comes amid ongoing flag debates and tourism boycott pressure from NAACP and other groups is noted but not central to the plate launch.
