A National Household Survey on Drug Abuse shows 12.6 million current illicit drug users this year, down from 14.5 million in 1988, but 3.4 million are aged 35 and older. Cocaine use rose to 1.9 million monthly, with 855,000 weekly users. ER drug cases rose 8.5 percent in Q2 1991.
General Motors plans to close 21 plants and cut 70,000 jobs to restore profitability by 1995. The Reuters report notes Wall Street welcome but UAW opposition, with stock dropping and the market keeping GM under review. Stempel promises a lean, responsive operation amid ongoing losses.
An architect says about 65 million dollars are needed to build five new schools and add over one million square feet in Aiken County.
