In Lebanon the hilltop Shiite village displays posters praising 16 year old Ahmad Khassir as a martyr. Lebanese resistance officials say Khassir carried out a suicide attack that destroyed an Israeli military headquarters near Tyre on November 11 1982, marking the first self inflicted strike against the Israelis in Lebanon.
Jose L. Gomez a Miami accountant who audited ESM Government Securities in Fort Lauderdale pleaded guilty in Cincinnati Ohio to eight felony counts including grand theft and obstruction of justice. He was formerly managing partner of Alexander Grant Co South Florida offices and linked to Home State Savings Bank collapse.

Three inmates at a medium-maximum security prison escaped after a helicopter hijacked by a woman landed in the yard and freed them. A guard was wounded in the ensuing gun battle. The helicopter then supposedly landed elsewhere with the inmates fleeing in a sedan.
The space shuttle Columbia was halted 14 seconds before planned liftoff due to a booster steering system issue. The seven crew members including a Florida congressman remained aboard briefly before returning to their quarters as engineers diagnosed an auxiliary power unit problem and cloud cover threatened the morning launch. No new launch date was announced.
The first female recipient of an artificial heart, a 40 year old Minnesota secretary, is in critical but stable condition after surgeons implanted a smaller 70 ml Jarvik-7 device at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Officials say the patient, gravely ill from acute viral myocarditis, would not have survived without the implant and is being monitored post operatively.
The 17th annual report finds smokers are 50 percent more likely to need health care and cost employers 200 to 900 dollars more per worker annually. It notes more on‑the‑job accidents, disability payments, and absences, and highlights workplace smoking controls as reducing risks.
South Carolina reports 8.8 million dollars recovered under a one time tax amnesty offering delinquent taxpayers from Sept 1 to Nov 30 faced no penalties. The program covered taxes owed for up to 32 years and prompted tougher enforcement and higher penalties going forward. Commissioner Hunter Howard highlighted its limited duration and boosted compliance concerns.
On this date, 150 years ago, South Carolina Act 2669 chartered Aiken as a town in Barnwell District. The law declared residents a body politic and defined town limits extending one mile around the bridge and railroad depository.
