DOE Debates Tower Types for Savannah River Plant
The U S Department of Energy has not decided between two cooling tower types for the Savannah River Plant to meet water quality standards. A Dec 31 decision will cover towers for the K Reactor and the C Reactor which is in cold stand by with cracks. The once through tower is favored at 43 million dollars but a recirculating design could cost about double to minimize waste heat damage, per environmental agency guidance. South Carolina officials say more data is needed to prove environmental protection.
