A French study reports a pill that safely terminates 85 percent of early pregnancies, offering a non surgical option and prompting ethical concerns. The drug is not yet available in the United States and may win approval next spring in France and Sweden.
At Bhabha Atomic Research Center in Trombay, Indian scientists advance nuclear tech using weapons-grade plutonium, enriched uranium, radioisotopes and lasers. India now operates a major research reactor and fast breeder tech, making its program self-reliant despite political pressure over weapons.

A string of holiday misfortunes includes a $1000 theft from the Broward Center for the Blind and a creche figure theft in Plantation Florida. Residents raised nearly $4000 to cover the loss while Anthony Paris a 56 year old blind Santa plans to return to volunteer work for Camp Fire Girls and Boys.
Three outfits raise funds and collect gifts for the season. The Aiken Jaycees Shopping Tour at Wal-Mart brought 49 children to shop for warm clothing and toys. Valley Empty Stocking Fund solicits donations through committees and banks, with checks sent to multiple P O boxes. Salvation Army kettle drive continues through Christmas, accepting clothing and food as part of the wider drive.
Owens-Corning Fiberglas will lay off 52 hourly workers at its Aiken facility effective Monday as part of company wide restructuring. Earlier, 20 salaried employees were terminated on December 5, and no further layoffs are expected at this time. The move follows aNovember recapitalization plan after Wickes Corp. hostile takeover attempts and notes a broader force reduction.
