Hanukkah starts this evening with an Adath Yeshurun service at 7:30 p.m. Friday led by Diane Gilden at 900 B Greenville St. Members will light a candle each night, marking the eight day festival rooted in the Maccabee story.
Warm conditions persist across the region with highs around 70 and partly cloudy skies. Tonight’s low in the upper 40s, Thursday and Friday highs in the 50s to 60s, cooler air returns, and Saturday warms to the 60s and 70s with 30s to 40s overnight.
At a North Augusta City Council meeting last night Councilman Dan Layman questioned how residents can reach home under the law saying you cannot drive or walk and taxis may be unavailable. Councilman Edward Ergle quipped about a juror who was never selected at Aiken County General Sessions court and Judge Rodney Peeples commented on luck.
A gym utility room fire at Midland Valley High School likely started from an electrical wire short. No injuries. 1,400 students were evacuated within a minute. fire kept to the utility room by walls. Fire officials and the band director noted generator restart and delayed door access helped contain the blaze.
Education Secretary T H Bell released a volley of statistics ranking states on education measures from dropout rates to test scores in a parting evaluation of American schools.
The update to the wall chart shows 73.9 percent of freshmen four years earlier graduated in 1983, up from 72.8 percent, with national tests improving in 32 states, declining in 10, and staying the same in light. President Reagan unveiled a three year defense reduction totaling 28.1 billion dollars, smaller than Stockman and aides said necessary to reach a 100 billion deficit goal. Speakes framed the cut as larger than prior requests but acknowledged it falls short of the target, with no tax increase ruled out. Congress and Republicans press for deeper cuts while the president weighs how to sell the plan to the public.
NORTH AUGUSTA The Aiken County Council and the Public Service Authority discussed long standing issues and agreed on a Work/Action Plan to review PSA activities before budget time. A public hearing will precede budget adoption and the PSA will brief the council on recommendations.
