Harvard University president Nathan M. Pusey will retire in June and assumes the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation presidency in fall 1971. He will replace Charles S. Hamilton Jr., as announced by Paul Mellon who founded the foundation in 1969.
Supreme Court Justice William O Douglas ordered the Air Force to keep Capt Susan Struck on active duty until a federal court in Washington state rules on her suit challenging a pregnancy discharge rule. Struck, 26, an unmarried nurse from Louisville Kentucky, recently gave birth to a daughter and would have been discharged today without the order.
United Nations ambassador Charles W. Yost appears to reject President Nixon’s offer of another government post as he prepares to vacate the U.S. delegation. When asked why George Bush was picked to succeed him, Yost deflected and said the question should be addressed elsewhere. He added he looks forward to returning to writing and commenting on current affairs.
Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley, 68, announced at a news conference that he will run for a fifth consecutive four year term in 1971. Daley has headed the Cook County machine and will face election next April.
The Commerce Department reports privately owned housing starts in November at 1,692,000 units annual rate, up from 1,570,000 in October. Analysts credit easier mortgage money and lower interest rates, with gains across major regions, per Harold C. Passer.
New York plans a $1 million effort to develop a heroin antagonist as a long lasting nonaddictive treatment to replace methadone. Mayor John Lindsay said the city will seek federal and state funds for the program to block heroin craving for up to a year.
John Leigh of Portland High School spotted a math mistake on an SAT college placement test, solved the problem as required, and then notified the Education Testing Service in Princeton. Officials responded this week saying they are embarrassed the error slipped inspection and praised Leigh for his 790 out of 800 score.
Nineteen valuable paintings stolen November 27 from the Montpellier museum in southern France were recovered today in a church in Toulouse. The works by Matisse Degas Corot and Utrillo were valued at $900000.

The Langley Bath Clearwater Christmas parade will start at 3 p.m. from L B C High School and march along Highway 421 to the Langley Shopping Center. The Aiken High Symphonic Band under William Slaughter and James Kitchings performed 11 pieces in the Third Annual Christmas Concert at the Aiken High Gym. The City of Aiken Recreation Department sponsored the event led by Mike Facciolo, featuring selections like Green Sleeves The Little Drummer Boy Noel and Christmas Moods.
In Saigon and Washington the 24 hour cease fires for Christmas and New Year are announced for Vietnam. American bombers will continue heavy raids on North Vietnamese supply routes in Laos and Cambodia during the truces. The Viet Cong pledges three day cease-fires over Christmas and New Year and four days for Tet. Cambodian involvement and broader cease-fire questions remain unsettled as fighting continues nearby.
ETV Network plans MEMORANDA interview with U. S. Sen. J Strom Thurmond on Monday at 9 p.m. Channel 35 SCETV and Channel 13 Aiken Cablevision. Thurmond discusses student unrest Vietnam war ROTC at Newberry College and 1972 Republican future. He also comments on the lame duck Congress and textile quota legislation.
GOP leaders learned from State Attorney General Daniel McLeod that candidates for District 7 State Senate Seat 3 may reside in Edgefield Saluda Lexington and must pay 500 filing fees by Tuesday. Aiken County is excluded. primary set for four counties and Pickens for another vacancy. Critics say election dates and registration deadlines are being rushed.
Wade Brodie vice president of Farmers & Merchants Bank was chosen by the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce board to lead as president for 1971. He fills the vacancy from Q Don Maxwell’s resignation and has led the Sell Aiken campaign. Brodie is a Newberry College and LSU Banking of the South alumnus with prior roles in the United Fund Aiken County T B Association Rotary Club and other local groups.
Santa visited Kalmia Hill School with USCA students for a community service event, then entertained about 40 children at Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center with guitarists providing carols. He followed with 60 youngsters at the Salvation Army Citadel and 50 at the Aiken Air Force Base 61st Radar Squadron.
A widow with five grandchildren struggles on minimal income while Salvation Army seeks six thousand dollars to provide Christmas extras. Donations from individuals and local businesses total thirty four hundred plus dollars, with additional contributions listed from residents and organizations.
