Winds ease as California wildfire crews gain ground
Calm winds allowed firefighters to advance on the Thomas Fire in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties as red flag warnings expired in parts of Southern California but a new alert loomed. A Cal Fire official confirmed the death of 32 year old Cory Iverson while battling the blaze on the eastern flank, marking a second fatality connected to the fire. Firefighters pressed to build lines above Santa Barbara communities including Montecito and Carpinteria as containment reached about 35 percent after spreading over more than 394 square miles since December 4.
