Major Quake Off Philippine Coast Registered At 7.3

A 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off Mindanao's coast in the Philippines, with preliminary U S Geological Survey reports noting no immediate casualties or damage. The quake originated about 40 miles off Mindanao's northeast coast, roughly 560 miles southeast of Manila, 160 miles northeast of Davao.

NAACP Chief Says Buffalo Room Suit Still Proceeds

NAACP President James Gallman of Aiken County said the discrimination suit by six private citizens against Buffalo Room Restaurant owners Bruce and Rose Salter remains active. He noted the Justice Department dropped its bias charge with an agreement to non discrimination in future dealings. The suit, filed for $200,000 per plaintiff, names others including Willar Hightower Rev. David Walker Rev. James Jones Nelson Rivers and Charles White. The case is still with the NAACP legal division and no dismissal has been announced.

Snow and Cold Paralyze Large Region From Rockies to Coast

Aiken Weather Outlook Dismisses Snow Possibility

Westinghouse praised yet marked down at Savannah River Site

DOE critic questions SRS rating of Westinghouse as contractor

Michael Lowe of the Energy Research Foundation challenges DOE’s good rating and 3.9 million bonus for Westinghouse at the Savannah River Site. He cites weak internal oversight and control and cost effectiveness as areas of marginal performance, saying the regulatory regime is not in place to restart SRS’s three idle reactors.

Community Christmas Drives Boost Local Families

Donations fuel several holiday programs in Aiken area including the Salvation Army kettle drive and the Valley Empty Stocking Fund. The fund, backed by local clubs and individuals, supported 243 families last year. The Aiken Jaycees run a fourth annual Christmas Shopping Tour on December 23 to buy clothing and toys for needy children, funded by donations from residents.
