A former CIA officer who aided Contra rebels reported a missing cargo plane carrying weapons and an American crew to George Bushs office. Bush staff released a chronology showing private efforts to resupply the Contras and the contact with Felix Rodriguez, tied to the Contra resupply scheme.
The 18th annual report states smoke from others' cigarettes injures healthy nonsmokers and cannot be eliminated by separating smokers. Dr. C Everett Koop notes smoking directly causes more than 300 000 deaths per year, while data on related sickness remains uncertain.

White House Chief of Staff Donald Regan appears before the Senate Intelligence Committee to learn who authorized the secret diversion of Iranian arms sale profits to Nicaraguan Contras and what President Reagan knew. Cabinet officials, including Shultz Teicher Meese and Weinberger, testify under oath as inquiry widens to the Iran Contra affair.
A federal advisory panel urges 60 to 80 percent raises for Cabinet members congressmen judges and top agency heads to align pay with duties. Reagan would see Cabinet salaries rise to 160000 and lawmakers to 135000 while his 200000 salary remains unchanged.
The commission proposes revised annual pay for about 3,000 top federal officials with President Reagan’s $200,000 salary unchanged. It lists positions, current counts, current salaries, and suggested new salaries from executive vice president to circuit judges and U.S. magistrates, across Cabinet, judiciary, and other federal offices.
The Valley Empty Stocking Fund and Salvation Army still seek donations to aid the needy before Christmas. The Aiken Jaycees Shopping Tour raised nearly $3,000 to take about 50 underprivileged children on a Wal-Mart shopping trip and to a Christmas party. Volunteers from the American Legion will collect at local banks Thursday and Friday.
