Bush begins Cabinet selection amid bipartisan outreach

Chancellor search in Palms' hands is under way

USC Aiken moves to a new phase in its chancellor search led by Dr. Sandra Hochel. The committee has recommended five semi finalists to USC President Dr. John Palms, who will review and announce his decision soon. Interim chancellor Tom Hallman remains among the five candidates.

USC Aiken awards largest December graduation class

USC Aiken conferred degrees at its December commencement at the Student Activities Center. Dalton B. Floyd, chairman of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, addressed 247 graduates, the largest December class in USCA history. North Augusta native Wes Childers earned summa cum laude with a graphic design and fine arts degree.

Aiken County to fund new and renovated area schools

The Aiken County Board of Education will invest in new schools in Areas 2 and 4 and major renovations at Schofield and Paul Knox Middle Schools under the five year Facilities Improvement Plan using bonds and state funds. A new elementary in Area 4 is planned for 2002 with about nine million dollars, while Area 2 aims for a 2008 start along the I-20 corridor.

Moody's Upgrades Aiken County Bond Rating to A1

Aiken County received notice that its general obligation bond rating was raised from A2 to A1 by Moody's Investors Service. Finance Director Terry Bodiford called it welcome news, saying the higher rating will ease bond marketing for capital improvements and reflect stronger status as a borrower.

SRS workers donate 10000 toys for tots drive

Savannah River Site employees from multiple divisions concluded the tenth annual Toys for Tots campaign by collecting about 10,000 toys and 521 stockings for CSRA children. Gifts ranged from Barbie dolls to bicycles and hula hoops, supporting infants to youths.
