Washington AP reports polls show Ford's national support from Republican leaders but loss of favor among rank and file. Gallup also finds 30 percent of registered party members favor a non candidate Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey as the Democratic field moves toward 1976.
Sen John Tower says George Bush is perfectly willing to disavow any plans to seek higher office. Tower made the remark as hearings opened on Bushs CIA nomination before the Senate Armed Services Committee chaired by Frank Church. Bush, Ford’s pick to succeed William Colby, faces confirmation questions on national security and leadership.
Congress to vote this week on a long debated energy bill and a proposal to extend individual income tax cuts into the new year. President Ford opposes both but may be compelled to accept them. Economists warn expiring tax cuts could drain $13 billion from the economy and raise unemployment by about 500,000 next year.
Premier Joop den Uyl said the government will wait out the Moluc can nationalist siege at the Indonesian consulate just as it did with the train hijackers who held 24 people for 12 days. Former legislator John Henry Williams, author of Aiken County Home Rule Act, is expected to be hired as county attorney at the 7 p.m. Board of Commissioners meeting at USCA. Five commissioners support the appointment, while Williams says he has not been contacted. Williams, 57, Clemson and USC Law School graduate, served eight years in the General Assembly and now works with Williams & Johnson in Aiken. Agenda includes public hearings on three ordinances and other items.
