Upstate Could Get Phone Code 864

The South Carolina Telephone Association urged the Public Service Commission to create a new 864 area code for the Upstate and part of western South Carolina. Exec director Ed Clement said wireless demand will exhaust numbers by midsummer, requiring the change to separate from the 803 area.

BMW Plant Alters Production For 94 In Greenville

BMW's Greer South Carolina plant will churn out about 300 cars this year far short of the 950 hoped for due to delays in the paint shop. Spokesman Bobby Hitt said issues should be resolved to hit next year's target of 20 000 to 30 000 cars. Production began in September using water based paints to curb pollution and the plant features five paint systems and unfamiliar equipment.

Midland Students Draw Praise For Fund Support

Midland Valley High School students are praised for fundraising for the Valley Empty Stocking Fund. Mary Etta Walker notes the flea market wash car events and other activities raise about 5000 dollars annually. The ceremony at 2 30 p m today marks their yearly contribution. The fund has over 16000 dollars donated with Christmas 11 days away. Last year 295 families received more than 31000 dollars.
