MOSCOW AP McDonald's placed an ad for 630 crew spots in the Soviet Union and drew more than 25,000 applicants in a day. Rem Langan says part time workers will earn about 1% rubles per hour, roughly $2.50 at the commercial rate.
Increasing clouds bring a chance of rain and possible sleet tonight with a low in the 20s. Friday remains cloudy with about a 50 percent rain chance and a high in the upper 30s. Page 8A for details.

Aiken County Council will vote on a new code of ordinances due for approval in January and effective February 1. The Administrative Committee endorsed a code from the Municipal Code Corporation requiring council votes to be recorded yea nay or abstain, except where a conflict exists. It also tightens rules on hiring outside attorneys and requires council approval for such expenditures. County Administrator W Scott Barnes notes past use of outside counsel and cites home rule as prompting a consolidated code to help citizens locate laws easily.
President Bush will join Andean leaders in Cartagena Colombia on February 15 for a one day summit on the drug war. The White House says security will be ensured and the trip will not require lodging. Also attending are Presidents Barco Garcia and Paz Zamora with Aronson leading preparations.
Energy Secretary James D. Watkins paused his push to store Rocky Flats waste in six states including South Carolina. He called the 1,601 cubic yard storage cap at Rocky Flats somewhat arbitrary, a claim denied by Colorado Governor Roy Romer. Watkins said the issue would be set aside for now.
Energy Secretary James Watkins releases long classified Hanford records from 1944 to 1960 detailing radioactive gas releases and plutonium production. An independent scientist panel said the data are essential to estimate public radiation exposure, with documents to be released in small batches for public review.
Donations mount for local fund drives as the Salvation Army kettle campaign continues in Aiken. The Valley Empty Stocking Fund, backed by civic clubs and posts, plans to aid 243 families last year totaling 783 people. Contributions may be mailed to multiple Po Boxes in Langley Clearwater and Graniteville. The Aiken Jaycees solicit gifts for their fourth Christmas Shopping Tour, which raised 4000 last year and will aid needy children on Dec 23.
