St Mary's Catholic Elementary School grades one through eight run a Christmas project "Southern Santa Goes North" to collect 100 to 150 toys for 60,000 homeless from Agnes. An 18 year old Bath youth, Melvin Jefferson, died at University Hospital in Augusta from injuries after a car ran off a road in Aiken County last Sunday. He had been in critical condition since the accident.

Area Peach Growers Seek South Carolina Peach Board

Area peach growers press to form a South Carolina Peach Board a self funded body for research and promotion of SC peaches. A nine member board would oversee a two cent tax on each three quarter bushel pack to fund peach research and marketing. Public hearings drew about 15 Johnston growers in support. Objections deadline is December 22 with a vote possible in January or February.

North Augusta Fire Department reported a Christmas tree fire at the home of Mrs. W. R. Edwards at 512 Goldman Street. Firefighters arrived at 11:01 a.m. and found damage to the rug and smoke damage to the ceiling. Police logged four fireworks complaints, two filed yesterday.
