The Willcox hotel, a longtime Aiken landmark, is the subject of a new medallion in the ADDA series. Prototypes on display at 206A The Alley and at local merchants. The seven medallions are offered for $120 as a discount set with individual pieces at $20. Reservations via the ADDA office at 649-2221.
The State Budget and Control Board voted 4-1 to slash agency spending by 4.5 percent. Treasurer Grady Patterson called the action painful and necessary as revenue shortfalls grew from 331 million to 348 million, after tapping a 101 million reserve in September.
USC Aiken and ATC prepared for across the board state budget cuts in the new fiscal year. They anticipated a retroactive 4.5 percent cut with an additional 0.5 percent held in reserve if revenues do not rebound. Dr. Susan Graham notes the college faces a serious budget crisis.
The Aiken County School District froze nearly 870000 in Lottery Funds allocated to 19 elementary and two charter schools after mid year budget cuts. The five percent cut will cost about 35 million in district revenue. Superintendent Linda Eldridge said discussions with Rep. Roland Smith explored using lottery money this year to offset losses, but district lacks authority. Allocations ranged from 29606 to 66814 per school to support instruction.
Sage Valley Golf Club, opened in 2001 on Bettis Academy Road, ranks seventh in Golf Digest list of top 10 best new private courses. Designed by Tom Fazio on 500 acres chosen by Weldon Wyatt, the 7331 yard par 72 layout features creeks, lakes and pines.
The NAACP urged Senate Republican leader Trent Lott to resign his leadership post after comments praising Strom Thurmond dating from Thurmonds 100th birthday. Black lawmakers and Rep. Elijah Cummings described the remarks as bigoted and harmful.
