Ancient Mars lake may have supported life
NASA researchers report Curiosity found evidence of an ancient freshwater lake near Mars equator dating to about 3.5 billion years ago. The lake appears Earth like in chemistry and could have hosted microbes, though no fossils are confirmed and detection limits remain. Findings appear in Science and at the AGU meeting in San Francisco.

Study finds many lung cancer tumors may be harmless
A Duke University led analysis suggests about 20 percent of CT detected lung tumors are slow growing and unlikely to cause problems. The study notes these are true cancers but symptom free and not life threatening, challenging aggressive treatment norms. Medical panels warn screening may over diagnose even as they push annual CT scans for high risk groups.
