Basra Murder Wave Claimed Over 40 Women This Year
In Basra, Iraq, religious vigilantes have killed at least 40 women this year over dress code, with mutilated bodies and notes accusing un-Islamic behavior. Maj. Gen. Jalil Khalaf links the attacks to sectarian groups enforcing strict Islamic rules, targeting women including those in Western attire. The killings, in an oil city near Iran, coincide with rising tensions after Saddam's overthrow and a Shiite-led government, with reports of coercion extending to Christian women in some areas.
