Beginning today the Aiken Standard unveils a new front page design with six columns of space for more news items. The previous edition used five columns, and the update aims to keep readers better informed with increased layout capacity.
William Kennedy Smith testified he had consensual sex with a 30 year old Jupiter woman who later accused him of rape. He described being picked up by a woman who became enraged after he misnamed her during sex and hit him when he tried to leave.
The Aiken City Council approved a 25000 funding boost for the Du Pont Planetarium at USC Aiken. The vote split with one member opposing the allocation of 10000 from accommodations tax money and 15000 from contingency funds. The council also formed an Environmental Committee and allocated funds to regional groups.
Michael Anaclerio was chosen Monday night to serve as Aiken's mayor pro tem succeeding Fred B. Cavanaugh who left the post after being elected mayor. The council rejected a motion to name Lessie B. Price to the post in a 4-3 vote with Price, Beverly Clyburn and Karen Morris Papouchado voting yes and Anaclerio, Cavanaugh, Skipper Perry and Eric Radford voting no.
Public safety officials and WSRC leaders assure a cautious restart of the idle K Reactor at Savannah River Site will be conducted safely. DNFSB chair John Conway notes the board’s role is to ensure safety during operation, not decide on restart necessity or tritium needs.
In Moscow an aide said Gorbachev plans to resign soon while three Slavic republics push for a new commonwealth of independent states. Spokesman Anrei Grachev said the president does not plan to resign while adviser Georgy Shakhnazarov hinted his departure may come soon amid moves to form a Russia Byelorussia Kazakhstan union.
A South Carolina Supreme Court ruling questions the fairness of parent tests for home schooling. The unanimous decision targets how noncollege educated parents are deemed adequate teachers, prompting calls for legislative discussion while officials caution at a full rework. Education leaders say the ruling centers on exam validation, not the test itself.
