Washington AP reports Nelson Rockefeller faces broad Senate support for confirmation as the nation’s first vice president. Only Barry Goldwater opposes, with two more senators undecided. Minority Leader Hugh Scott estimates at most 13 opponents.
Secretary of State Kissinger begins direct efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem during a Brussels visit. He will meet separately with Turkey's Melih Esenbel and Greece's Dimitri Bitsios on Wednesday while attending the NATO foreign ministers meeting. The talks follow two postponed trips to Ankara due to Turkey's government crisis.
The Common Market summit debated oil policy as the United States seeks a united front of oil importing nations to curb consumption and press for negotiations with Arab and other oil exporting governments. The nine nations endorse the policy and join the International Energy Agency, while France remains outside seeking separate Arab deals to secure its oil supply.
