C L Dennis of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks announces a nationwide strike set to begin at 12:01 a.m. December 10, defying Congress the White House and federal courts. Nixon urged a 45 day delay but bargaining under the Railway Labor Act failed to secure a voluntary postponement from four AFL CIO unions.
The North Carolina Milk Commission meets to decide on fixing retail milk prices amid industry support and retailer and Attorney General opposition. Some Raleigh firms raise home delivery milk to 34 cents per quart, up two cents, after a farmer price increase. A public hearing on price fixing was held in Greensboro on November 16.
James Farmer, 50, resigns as assistant secretary of Health Education and Welfare after 20 months in the federal bureaucracy. He announces a return to his civil rights activism, saying he chafed at the bureaucracy and will resume his role as advocate and critic. He notes the resignation is not due to a dispute with the President's racial policies.
The IRS warned it is monitoring 50 Southeastern corporations for disguising political campaign contributions as tax deductible business expenses. A spokesman cautioned that fraud is involved if such deductions are claimed, noting two common schemes dummy corporations and loaning corporate employees to campaigns are illegal.
Democratic Sen. Birch Bayh accused the Nixon Administration of a blatant appeal to Southern racial instincts. Speaking to the Atlanta Press Club, Bayh charged Republicans use of the old black and white flag of conflict to solidify political strength in the South and reopen old wounds. He predicted voters would reject such tactics.
Charleston councilwoman Mrs. James Liddy, chair of Charleston Citizens for Clean Air, charged the South Carolina Pollution Control Authority with conflict of interest over two members who work for polluting industries. She said the PCA undercut a health department order demanding plant pollution stops at W R Grace Co Charleston and International Paper Co Georgetown, with extensions granted by the PCA.
Negotiators announced a tentative contract for 3000 striking fuel oil truck drivers in the Midwest. Details await ratification by Teamsters locals. Steve Shultz, head of the union bargaining team, called the agreement satisfactory to both sides.
AEC Chair Glenn Seaborg praised Savannah River Plant SRP as an indispensable part of operations. He cited future products Californium-252 plutonium-238 cobalt-60 and curium-244 produced at SRP and noted $3 billion in federal investment over 20 years. Aiken High School students were charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and conspiracy after a bus driver was beaten Friday. Joseph Barry Kirby, a senior, was reportedly attacked while waiting to finish his route and was released on a $500 bond. Six students received $1,000 bonds each as the investigation continued. A base ball bat and leather belt were seized at the scene. Campus tensions surfaced with a Confederate flag towel around the pole, later removed by officials.
An early morning blaze gutted the home of Charles Cochran on Highway 1 North leaving a family of six with no food clothing or shelter. Firefighters arrived at 2 28 a m and believe the fire started in a closet used for the children toys. Donations of clothes toys and money are requested at the Aiken or Center Community Fire Department.
Secretary Rogers told a Senate panel Washington plans air interdiction and noncombat aid for Cambodia with 155 million in economic and military assistance. Laird echoed, citing 70 percent for ammunition and other gear to help Cambodia defend itself and deter North Vietnam while maintaining regional stability.
The Aiken County legislative delegation will meet at 7 p.m. tonight at delegation headquarters at the corner of York Street and Park Avenue. There was no meeting scheduled last night, contrary to yesterday's report.
