Making Small South Carolina Farms a Big Business
A 164 page report for the South Carolina Agriculture Department says if residents spend an extra 5 per week on local farm goods, the state’s small farms could gain about 1.2 billion dollars. The study from the Crossroads Resource Center outlines marketing campaigns, state food hubs, and farmer collaborations to expand in state food supply and jobs. It notes 90 percent of the 11 billion annual food spend goes to out of state products and supports creating 15 to 20 producer associations and three food hubs. The plan will be refined into a strategic plan to be released next spring with input from more than 150 stakeholders.

Vivian Freeman Dies at 86 Former Nevada Assemblywoman
Former Reno Democrat Vivian Freeman who championed women and children or conservation and education died at 86 from complications of a stroke. A nurse and transplant recipient, she served in the Nevada Assembly from 1986 to 2002 and helped pass a 1990 abortion rights measure.
