The City of Aiken seeks to buy the vacant First Citizens Bank building at 135 Laurens St. S.W. for 750000 to move the Finance Department and City Manager's office. Renovations estimated at 700000 are needed. Funding comes from CPST funds approved in 2010.
The Aiken County Board of Education approved a Tax Increment Financing district for a 21,000 square foot Food Lion Harvey's on Atomic Road in Jackson. Town officials commit 880000 in incentives to Harvey's to entice the project, with bond payments funded by future tax revenues, shared with the school district after up to ten years.
Agnes Seigler Key died in Aiken, South Carolina. She was 87 and a longtime resident. Services will be announced by the Key Funeral Home.
Clarence Pfundheller, 91, recalls the Pearl Harbor attack while set to attend the 70th anniversary ceremony at a site above the USS Arizona. He will be joined by fellow survivors, other World War II veterans, and students hoping to hear their stories at the annual Navy and National Park Service event.
Aiken Design Review Board unanimously approves Betsy Simons plan to renovate 159 Laurens St. N.W. for a new business with sage green paint and metal awning, aiming for a depot style look. Board also approves Lyanne Franklin Haislip facade work at 121 Laurens St. S.W. reopening second floor windows and adding doors and two wrought iron terraces.
