Planning panel says restrict area to residential and open space
Aiken officials discuss limiting commercial use near Pine Log Road and Citizens Park. Proposals include preserving open space lands, preventing big box developments, adding small services for residents, and extending the Comprehensive Plan to cover new areas. A connector road behind existing businesses may improve access.

School board weighs five year building plan funding
Gallman and district comptroller Brock Heron say about 4.5 million is in the building reserve to cover planned construction and maintenance for five years without raising the current 27.5 mill debt tax. Renovations may rise 15 percent due to stricter international code, triggering sprinklers in areas over 300 students and five percent weight increases. Oakwood Windsor Elementary faces multiple projects, and some schools may need new cafeterias to avoid sprinklers. The district may need a bond referendum in four to eight years to fund major new schools, with possible four year or three year debt plans raising taxes by 20 or 40 percent respectively.

Kandahar Falls After Taliban Abandon City
Combat Karzai confirmed chaos in Kandahar as Taliban fled in panic, with some looting and gunfire reported by frightened residents. He said no fighting occurred between rivals while leaders and fighters fled the city, abandoning weapons. The new council said Kandahar was calm, and Taliban surrender of arms was reported. Omar’s whereabouts remained unknown, with Karzai vowing to arrest him. The Taliban had begun surrendering Kandahar after US airstrikes and opposition forces drove them from most of the country.
