Charles and Deborah Crosby urge leniency as Thor the 450 pound black bear hibernates in a backyard den. Bloomington officials cite a city ordinance banning wild animals and require the bear to be moved within 90 days. The City Council meets Monday to decide if Thor may remain undisturbed.
The forecast expects sunny skies turning cloudy with warmer highs in the 50s on Sunday. Night will be milder with lows mostly in the 30s. Monday brings mostly cloudy skies with highs in the 50s and lows in the 20s.

Santa Claus arrived in Aiken County to take part in five local parades yesterday. In Jackson Town Parade about 3,000 people watched at 11 a.m. with wins by Jackson Middle School Band and Silver Bluff Band. The New Ellenton Parade drew 3,000 to 4,000 spectators at 1 p.m. winners included Foreman Memorial Baptist Church and First Baptist Church.
Moscow AP reports cracks appear in Gorbachev's pared facade as he meets Reagan for a third summit. Glasnost and perestroika promise openness and reform, delighting intellectuals yet sparking resistance within Soviet society and the press.
Reagan and Gorbachev prepare to sign a historic arms treaty at the White House in eight hours of talks over three days. They seek to cut the most dangerous nuclear weapons by half and may discuss a border agreement. The meeting follows Reykjavik and Geneva, with up to five sessions starting Tuesday.
A WYFF-TV poll of South Carolina voters shows Strom Thurmond favored over former Gov. Dick Riley by 49 percent to 36 percent in a potential Senate race. The survey conducted the week of Nov. 24 also notes 55 percent think Thurmond should not seek re election. Thurmond turns 85.
A torch exploded injuring 25 year old Joey Johnson at Barton’s Bait Distributors on Good Spring Road. Johnson suffered first and second degree burns to face and arms and a fire destroyed the building housing cricket residents. Johnson, in good condition at MCG Hospital, believes the torch malfunctioned. owner Francis W. Barton is described as a good man. Fire crews responded around 11:30 a.m. Friday led by GVW Volunteer Fire Department Chief Philip A. Napier.
A USAir Boeing 737 lost its right engine five minutes after takeoff for Boston. The engine fell 5,000 feet, creating a two foot deep crater in a Deptford Township farm field near Sewell, New Jersey. No injuries were reported aboard or on the ground as the plane returned to Philadelphia International Airport.
