Vice President Spiro Agnew said he will deliver a major speech on a new topic before departing for a 10 day Far East trip starting December 26. He hinted Vietnam could be part of the visit and noted he writes some speeches with help from five or six staff writers.
Deputy Minister Herman Martins announced that Gordon Mackie, a 10th South Pole expedition mechanic, died after falling down a precipice about 100 miles from Sanae base. He was unmarried and suffered fatal head and neck injuries Wednesday.

Marlo Fox, 74, of Avoca New York, says he paid $1.55 for groceries and believes he left his wallet containing $3,960 on a store counter. The retired potato farmer says he carries his life savings in cash to pay bills and offers $300 reward for the money’s return.

President Nixon met with Clement F. Haynsworth Jr. and announced that Haynsworth will continue as chief judge of the U.S. Fourth Circuit after the Senate rejected his nomination to the Supreme Court. Nixon praised the judge for courage and integrity amid a brutal, unfair attack.
