Pioneer 10 clears Jupiter and heads to the Milky Way
Pioneer 10 has sailed through Jupiter’s radiation belts and continues to transmit data as it moves toward the Milky Way. Scientists, led by project manager Charles Hall, celebrate data on Jupiter’s magnetic field and radiation belts while monitoring potential spacecraft damage from intense radiation. The probe, weighing 570 pounds, is expected to send data for about five years, reaching up to two billion miles from Earth near Uranus.
