Aiken man dies after fall from second-story window
Police investigate the weekend death of 43 year old Matthew Gartrell after he fell from a second story window on Hampton Avenue in Aiken. He was found face down beneath the open window near Laurens Street by EMS personnel. His wife Tina Gartrell, 31, told officers she jumped from the window to escape alleged assault.

Smith urges two tier plan to plug budget shortfalls
South Carolina Representative Roland Smith proposes a two tier response to the budget gap. The Budget and Control Board should cut agency budgets across the board next week and then the General Assembly would override. Smith, a Warrenville Republican, says five days would let the legislature implement actions while protecting critical agencies. Outgoing Gov Hodges recalled lawmakers for a session on December 9 to address at least 330 million dollars in revenue shortfalls. The board could then impose across the board cuts as a safety net if House and Senate stall.

UN inspectors push into Saddam palace hunt for mass weapons
